“If My People…”
Change must start in God’s people. We must be the first to humble ourselves, to pray, to seek his face, and turn from our wicked ways, before we can expect anyone else to do the same. It says, “if MY people.” Change will come in a nation when the people of God humbly submit to Him again.
The “if” is by far the most crucial, because without the “if,” there is no “then.” Are we living lives of obedience? Are we humbling ourselves before Him? If the answer to those questions is “yes,” THEN comes the part we all deeply desire.
Since 1983, a day has been set aside each year for the purpose of prayer and meditation. It wasn’t until 1988 that it became the first Thursday in May. But more important than what day it is on the calendar, is the heart behind this day. This is a day to remember and return. To remember what God has done, and return and repent in the ways we have been erring. Our nation was founded by men who feared God. Men who knew this great experiment would fail without His aid. The Constitutional Convention was stopped so that the men could pray and seek the Lord and His wisdom and blessing on their work.
Prayer has always been a pillar of our nation. From the beginning of America, leaders call us to prayer in times of war and times of thanksgiving. And in a moment like this, nothing is needed more in America then for God’s people to pray, to humble ourselves, to repent. For when the people of God do that, God never fails. He will keep his promise. The question is, will we humble ourselves, turn from wickedness, and repent? For when we do, His promise is sure, He will, “hear from heaven, forgive our sin, and heal our land.”
